.......and you should know that I camped as a kid in Scouts and hated it. BUT! I was tent camping then, and surrounded my massive douche-nozzles. So, maybe this time will be different?

Kinja'd!!!

Here is my trusty steed. 2009 Silverado 2WD V6. 149K miles on it. I’ve had it for about a year. Mostly problem free! However, this will be the first time into the hills and I’m slightly nervous. It has the occasional check engine light under heavy load due to a miss-fire. However, my mechanic at the dealership I work at told me to put transmission fluid in my fuel tank. Yeah, didn’t see that one coming. But, I trust him and I did it. The first time driving under load (read, full throttle/passing maneuver type thing) it threw a light. Light flashes for a few seconds, then clears. Every subsequent test yielded no check engine light. I’m cautiously optimistic!

Anyway, it’s going to be upper 30's to low 40's at night in the back of this thing. I have plenty of blankets and pads to sleep on. Also this temperature is excellent for one very important thing: NO BUGS! I’ll likely be doing some hiking the A/T while I’m there so I will hopefully have some good pics.

Wish me luck! I leave Thursday evening after work!

Edit: Camper shell not designed for vehicle. But, it was $250 bucks and serves the purpose enough. Especially with 5 tubes of silicone applied :)

Bakersville, NC area is where I will be.

Trans fluid in the gas tank??? Is it some sort of injector cleaner? Cleans spark plugs?

You’ll have more fun this time around.  Though I want to know the logic behind putting hydraulic fluid through your fuel system...

Tons of detergents in ATF, it is an amazing cleaner, especially for carbon deposits.

That is just an honest hardworking truck. I always liked how that gen looked even in low trim 2WD.

Have fun! It’s absolutely perfect weather here in middle Georgia so I’m a little surprised it will be so cold only a little bit north.

Are there some general rules on this (i.e. not on cars newer than 2010, put in 1qt per 20 gallons of gasoline)?

What AMGtech said. I had no idea. But damn if it didn’t make a difference so far!

Yeah, barely reaching 60 during the day. If I had gone a week before or after, it would be warmer by a significant margin. But I work.

And I hope I do have more fun this time. If not, there’s always booze. :)

Why did you silicone the topper on? I guess mine have all been designed for the truck they were on but the foam tape has kept them water tight and easily removable for hauling large shit.

So screw fuel injector cleaner, just add a tablespoon of ATF?

He told me to put the whole quart of ATF in it with a half tank of fuel.

This one wasn’t designed for this truck, however, for $250 bucks, it was close enough. It was about 1 inch shy on length which left a gap of less than 1/8 inch between it and the front of the pickup box. Also, the windows are old and leak as well. So, yeah, silicone all the things.

I’ve never done it with ATF, so I can't accurately answer that. Personally I'd be worried about damaging the cats. But your ratio is probably an excellent starting point.

Seems like Seafoam or Marvel Mystery Fluid or whatever magical elixir you believe in, is basically ATF

I’ve never bought into those types of “quick fix” type things. However, this was spot on. And you’re likely right. Just another way for the industry to make money.

I wouldn’t.

I’d do an actual injector servicing (not STP tank dump... Like an actual injector clean, if not full-on removal, test and ultrasonic clean) before dumping oil like ATF in the tank. Too much oil and hello fouled spark plugs and O2 sensors .

I don’t really mind using it as a poor mans engine flush when you run a little a few days before an oil change. But the fuel system, just nah.

How much did you put in? And how full was your tank?

Full quart, 1/2 tank. Filled it the next day though.

I had an oil pressure relief valve stuck on a big block Ford that was causing the oil filter to burst. I tried the ATF trick, didn’t work fast enough, the excessive pressure caused another filter to burst. Changed the pump out and all was well again.

I like to put a half quart of ATF in every other oil change or so on my own stuff. Helps to keep issues like that from every happening in the first place.
